Amazing New Solar Roofing Solution from Tesla Chief Elon Musk, Sunny Side Up!

Amazing new solar roofing solution from SolarCity. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk demo video

If you’re into the environment and being cool at the same time, then this is definitely something you should consider buying. It’s a new solar roofing solution for homes, and it was just introduced to the world by Tesla CEO and SolarCity Chairman Elon Musk.

At the end of this article you’ll see a video of Musk introducing different types of solar panels that ‘mimic’ traditional roofing shingles but are far more efficient, sturdy and will power your home, to boot!

Musk essentially unveiled a range of solar roofing shingles that “look better than a normal roof, generate electricity, last longer, have better insulation and have an installed cost that is less than a normal roof plus the cost of electricity.”

That’s huge. Solar roofing, until now, has been an expensive and tedious exercise, and the worst part is, everyone can tell that you have solar panels on the roof. Not with Solar Roof, as the new product is called.

Musk showcased a few different styles of roof tiles, including a french slate look as well as classic Tuscan shingles. But apart from looking similar to traditional shingles, these solar shingles are very unique.

One of them actually changes from transparent to opaque depending on the angle of light that falls on it.

From street level, the roof is completely opaque and you can barely see the thin solar film on them. From the vantage point of the sun, however, these shingles are almost transparent. That means natural light can come in through the roof during the day.

And the best part? All of these are made of glass! They’re calling it Tesla Glass and, as you’ll see in the video, you can drop something as heavy as a kettlebell on it without breaking it. Tesla Glass was actually developed by Tesla Motors under the utmost secrecy – unusual for a company that pretty much open-sources everything and believes in an open policy regarding patents and such.

Interestingly, the program director for Tesla Glass is Mike Pilliod, who formerly worked at Apple and has several Apple patents with his name on them – patents specifically related to glass touchscreens and mobile devices that use glass, like the iPhone.

Rumor has it that Tesla Glass was being developed for Tesla’s electric vehicles, but now it seems they’ve found a solid application for roofing tiles. We could still see Tesla Glass in future EVs from Tesla, but using it for tiles is probably the first large-scale application for the new material.
