Why an S Pen Doesn’t Sound Right for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus

Samsung Galaxy S8 S Pen rumor

With possibly a month or so to go before the Samsung Galaxy S8 and its siblings are revealed to the world, yet another leak has made its way into the media. A 7-minute video of what are supposedly jelly cases for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus is currently up on YouTube.

The cases clearly show the slot for the hoped-for S Pen, but we suspect it’s one of those rumors that will remain just that – a rumor. The source hasn’t been verified as authentic, and there are other signs that this might just be a hoax.

The biggest clue, says the voiceover on the video, is a rectangular cutout at the bottom of the case that matches the S Pen’s location on a Note 7. However, there doesn’t seem to be any cutout large enough for a charging jack to fit, and the hole for the 3.5mm jack appears too small as well.

Considering the fail on those two fronts, we’re skeptical about accepting the argument for an S Pen to be included in either the Galaxy S8 or the Galaxy S8 Plus.

Another reason we’re not expecting to see an S Pen come with the S8 is the fact that the S Pen is one of the more notable differences that separates the Galaxy Note series from the Galaxy S series. Would Samsung even cross that line?

If Samsung has dropped the idea of a Note 8 and intends to have the S8 Plus replace it, that might lend a little more believability to what the cases in the video show. But there’s no evidence that there won’t be a Note 8 or an equivalent phablet for 2017 from Samsung. Moreover, the lack of a proper charging cutout on the cases and the inappropriate size of the 3.5mm jack clinches the decision for us.

You can decide for yourself…
