Android 8.0 Oreo – The New Mobile Operating System for Google Pixel 2?

Android 8.0 Oreo could be the new mobile OS that Google Pixel 2 runs on

Top executives often skirt around the issue when it comes to new products, but they sometimes make it so obvious that it’s hard to believe. So, when a clear message comes from a person like Hiroshi Lockheimer, SVP Android, Chrome OS & Play at Google, we take notice.

Google’s head of Android recently tweeted an image that showed a bunch of letters and the word “OREO” showing clearly at the top. Here it is:

What we can assume from this is that the next version of Android, which will most likely make its first appearance on Google Pixel 2 coming out this year, will be called Oreo or something similar.

That ties in with the traditional naming of Android versions. We’re up to N with Nougat, so the next version should be something with O, and Oreo seems like the right fit.

We already know that the Pixel 2 is going to be a premium device, but little else is known about the next generation of Pixel smartphones from Google. Now, however, it’s quite possible that Android Oreo will be the big feature on Google Pixel 2.

Google has made it very clear that the Pixel family of smartphones will have an “annual rhythm”, as stated by the head of Google’s Pixel division, Rick Osterloh, recently. Therefore, it’s very likely that the annual refresh will include the operating system as well.

With Android Nougat, Google held back from rolling it out to OEM Android devices for as long as it could, and the company did the same with Google Assistant as well, finally allowing both products to sow their wild oats in the wide open world of Android devices.

It’s likely that Google will do the same with Android O as well, bringing it first as a preview to current Pixel and Nexus devices before launching it officially alongside the Pixel 2.
