Amazon Alexa Makes its Way into Hotel Rooms – the Virtual Personal Valet

As the utility of virtual assistants keeps expanding, tech majors racing against each other to advance their personal assistants have taken their competition to a new area, your hotel room.

The AI-powered, voice-enabled personal assistant is the new-found holy grail in the tech world. Apple has Siri, Amazon has Alexa, Microsoft has Cortana and Alphabet has Google Assistant, and they all want to get their assistants in front of us as much as they can. As businesses start adopting the technology, the list of things these smart personal assistants can do will only grow from here, and the tech majors are doing their best to keep pushing the boundaries.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri are eyeing the hotel industry to put their digital assistants to good use. Bloomberg notes that Four Seasons in Washington, JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, and Wynn Resorts Ltd are some of the hotels that have started using digital assistants.

Hotels can use digital assistants to get thing done, like allowing the customer to turn on the lights, check the menu, control room temperature and so on. Instead of calling room service or the front desk or housekeeping for everything, they can check with these digital assistants. It makes things look a lot more sophisticated, but it makes hotel staff more efficient as well.

“The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, a Texas property with 1,002 rooms, has installed Alexa devices in 10 of its most popular rooms, with plans to equip an additional 100 rooms next month. The digital assistant can be used to control lights in five of the rooms, but the focus is on using Alexa as a personal concierge for ordering room service, or requesting towels or toothpaste from housekeeping. The resort said it has been testing the Amazon technology since October.”Bloomberg

These are still early days for virtual assistants. As technology develops, business will find more and more ways to make use of it to serve their customers, further increasing adoption. From smartphones and smart homes, digital assistants moved into connected cars; and now, they are going to follow us right to our hotel rooms wherever we travel.
