From what we’ve seen of all the leaks, rumors and other sources about the iPhone 7, we know that the new smartphone from Apple will have the following features.

iPhone 7 Features

  • Modified antenna lines that are more esthetic than those on the iPhone 6S and 6 Plus
  • Available Black and Space Blue, but may also come in Gold, Silver and White
  • No 3.5 mm audio port, so you’ll have to buy a lightning dongle to use with regular headsets
  • No stereo speakers on the iPhone 7 Plus
  • A10 processor – upgraded from the A9 found on the iPhone 6S
  • Higher screen resolution – full HD
  • Could come with virtual home button, but not likely
  • Could be waterproof and suitable for underwater photography
  • Larger camera aperture on the iPhone 7; dual lens on the iPhone 7 Plus

Downsides

There are usually very few downsides to buying an iPhone – any model for that matter – but this time there may be some serious repercussions because of the change from an analog to a digital audio port. Sources say that Digital Rights Management laws may prevent certain premium content from being made available on these devices through iTunes.

Known as the “analog hole”, these restrictions are only valid for digital delivery of content. Since the lightning port is essentially a digital medium of transfer, those restrictions could kick in.

The other major concern is the lack of stereo speakers as on the iPad Pro. Apple lovers were hoping that the iPhone 7 would sport the first edition of stereophonic sound for iPhones, but it looks like that’s not going to happen. Recently leaked schematics show no second speaker, but a grill in its place.

Upsides

If the waterproof rumors are true, this could be a fantastic bonus for iPhone buffs. You no longer have to worry about getting your phone wet. On the contrary, why not take it on your next scuba diving adventure!? If Apple does include this feature, the iPhone 7 will have the ability to color-correct and edit images taken under water.

The other upside is the smart connector expected to be seen on the iPhone 7. It’s already on the iPad Pro, but Apple may well put it on the new iPhone as well. On the positive side, Apple makes a few accessories that you can use to hook up the phone, and Logitech also makes a keyboard called CREATE and a docking station that also charges the unit. Unfortunately, nobody else is making accessories for the smart connector at the moment, but that could change.

For a pro user, the biggest upside is probably the upgraded 3GB RAM that should give you enough power for intensive processes.

All things considered, is it really worth upgrading from your iPhone 6S or 6 Plus to the new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus? We tried to answer that question here.
