Microsoft Slashes Surface Book Starting Price by $250, Now on Sale for $1249

Surface Book price slashed to $1249 for base model

At $1499, the base model Surface Book was considered by many to be pricey, the same as a MacBook Pro, the base price of the new model of which is now a cool $1499. But the non-Touch-Bar model is priced at $1299, so that’s pretty much in line with what Microsoft is now offering the Surface Book for – $1249 for the 8GB/128GB i5 model.

The Surface Book price drop is an interesting one because it now competes with the base MacBook Pro without the Touch Bar. Could that be why Microsoft relented on the price? After all, someone with $1500 to spend might as well choose the MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar option, since they’re the same price. Why would they choose the Surface Book otherwise, unless they were a hardcore Windows 10 fan or really wanted touch and pen support?

That’s one reason why they might have slashed the price. The other is obviously to boost sales during the current holiday season. Could it be mere coincidence that they’ve announced it on the same week as Black Friday? Hmm. Incidentally, the price goes back up after November 28 or “until stocks last” – whichever comes earlier, obviously.

It’s likely that they’re trying to push out their remaining stock ahead of a new product launch, but there’s no evidence that points to that. That leads us to believe it’s a combination of the first two reasons. A good decision, in our opinion.

Here are the specs for the device on offer:

Price: $1249 (Normally $1499)
Processor: 6th generation (Skylake) Intel Core i5
RAM: 8 GB
Storage: 128 GB
Dedicated GPU: No

The two things that really make this model better than the base Macbook Pro are its aspect ratio of 3:2 – unconventional by current standards – and the fact that it has a pixel density of 267 ppi against the 227 ppi on the MacBook Pro. Of course, you’re also getting the Surface Pen and a touch device for what you’d be paying for a MacBook Pro without the Touch Bar so, on the whole, we think $1250 for the Surface Book base model is a pretty good deal.
