iOS 10 Hits 76% Adoption Rate, iOS 9 at 18% as of January 4, 2017

iOS 10.x - including iOS 10.2 - is not installed on 76% of all active iOS devices

According to data published recently by Apple Inc., 76% of all iOS devices are now on iOS 10.x (including iOS 10.2.) 18% are on iOS 9.x and the rest are on iOS 8 or lower. Information from MacRumors shows that the jump in iOS adoption was significant during the 2016 holiday season. Installations of iOS 10.x stood at 63% as on November 27, 2016.

That’s a significant piece of data because it points to strong iPhone sales during the final quarter of 2016. One of the other reasons could also be the release of iOS 10.2 with the new emoji support and the TV app, not to mention several bug fixes and “jailbreak blockers” that kept dropping prior to the full release of iOS 10.2.

On January 10, Apple will start pushing the first beta of iOS 10.3, but at this point it’s hard to say whether that will positively impact iOS 10.x adoption. Nevertheless, the window of opportunity is quickly closing for jailbreak enthusiasts waiting for an iOS 10.2 jailbreak – or even a more stable iOS 10.1.1 jailbreak from Luca Todesco.

The best thing to do now is to save your SHSH2 blobs for iOS 10.2 in case there’s no iOS 10.2 jailbreak released before Apple stops signing the version. That’s not likely to happen soon because iOS 10.3 will be on its first beta, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If an iOS 10.2 jailbreak does come within the next few weeks and you’ve already upgraded to iOS 10.3 by then, the saved blobs will allow you to downgrade to iOS 10.2 even after Apple stops signing it. We’ve explained how that works in the article linked above so you may want to quickly review that.

For now, iOS 10 adoption is certainly much better than the success (or lack of success) that Microsoft has been having with its Windows 10, which is currently estimated to be on not more than 25% of all desktop devices around the world.
