Dell-icious: Dell UltraSharp 32 Ultra HD 8K Monitor with 1 Billion Colors at $4,999 – What a Deal

Dell 8K monitor

Dell is extremely aggressive this year with several key consumer product launches at CES 2017, not the least of which is an 8K monitor that packs in as many as 4 X 4K monitors into a 32-inch screen.

That’s the Dell UP3218K, with a resolution of 7680 x 4320 (33 Megapixels), a pixel density of 280 ppi and 1.07 billion colors, covers the entire gamut of sRGB and AdobeRGB colors.

The 8K monitor with the $5K pricing might seem a bit steep, but the company looks at it in a different way. Frank Azor, GM for the Alienware and XPS brands, joked with The Verge before the unveiling that it would be considered a reasonable purchase “if rationalized as buying four small 4K monitors.”

With these kinds of specs, however, the product itself is unmatched on the market. Even the Sharp 8K monitor, the 27-inch IGZO model that’s just past its prototype stage, isn’t as big as the one from Dell.

Besides, Dell already has a sizable following in the gaming and business communities that would kill for an 8K monitor like the UP3218K. As such, we don’t see much competition for this monitor any time soon. PC gamers will definitely find this to be a useful product, but professionals like graphic designers and architects may also see the appeal. It seems to have quite a broad market on the sheer strength of the visual experience it can deliver.

The release date for the Dell UP3218K has been announced as March 23, 2017. Though pricey to begin with, we expect it to come down as others like Sharp start putting out their own 8K products.

Another thing we’re assuming is that Dell might use this 8K monitor as either standard or an upgrade option for the Dell Smart Desk that’s been in the works for a couple of years and has the kind of UI that Microsoft gave the Surface Studio.

No official word has been received about that from the company, but it’s very likely that the Smart Desk is at an advanced stage of its production cycle. In fact, it was originally slated to be announced at CES 2017 which, unfortunately, ends today.
