Dell Alienware 2017 Gaming Laptops Now Have Intel 7th-gen Kaby Lake Processors

Dell Alienware with Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake quad-core processors

Premium gaming laptop brand Alienware from Dell now ships with Intel’s seventh-generation Kaby Lake processors starting 2017. Though the processor was launched a while ago, it’s only now that the quad-core versions are making their way into laptops.

Dell has opted to upgrade their entire lineup of Alienware laptops with Kaby Lake CPUs. The laptops were made available on January 5, at the start of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017.

The Alienware 13 is now available in two Kaby Lake variants: the Core i5-7300HQ and the Core i5-7700HQ. The 7300 can achieve a Turbo Boost clock speed of 3.5GHz, while the 7700 peaks at 3.8GHz. Onboard cache on both is 6M, and the top end has 32GB of RAM. Graphics processing is provided by the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, which has 6GB of RAM.

The Alienware 15 comes with the same CPU options, as well as one more choice: the Core i7-7820HK with 8M cache and 4.4GHz Turbo Boost. High-end graphics are courtesy AMD’s Radeon RX470 8GB (GDDR5) and NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB of RAM.

Of course, the Alienware 17 naturally sports the most power, with NVIDIA’s 1080 graphics card offering 8GB of memory. The laptop itself matches most of the other specs of the top two variants of the Alienware 15.

The Alienware 15 and 17 models offer 4K displays and a higher 3TB storage option, but the Alienware 13 does have the advantage of an OLED display.

In terms of specs, there aren’t too many upgrades from earlier iterations other than the fact that Intel’s seventh-generation quad-core processors power the Alienware laptops from Dell.

Though you may not see any performance improvements because of dedicated graphics processing that happens outside the CPUs, the pricing is a lot more attractive. The 17 now starts at $1,349, the 15 at $1,199 and the 13 at $999.

Here’s an updated list of the best gaming CPUs as of March 2018. It’s a must-read.

The higher your requirements, the higher the price, naturally, but it’s nice to know that amateur gamers don’t have to spend that pretty a penny to own a pro gaming laptop – even if it’s just the entry-level model.
