Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 to Get Android 7.0 Nougat, Galaxy Tab S3 Coming Soon

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 release date

Late last week, a benchmark database showed a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 running Android 7.0 Nougat. Yesterday, Wi-Fi Alliance, the independent body that certifies Wi-Fi products, has certified six separate models of Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, and all of them mention Android 7.0 Nougat as the operating system.

The six variants of Galaxy Tab S2 that were Wi-Fi certified are: SM-T817 (international), SM-T817P (Sprint), SM-T817R4 (U.S. Cellular), SM-T817A (AT&T), SM-T817W (Canada), SM-T817T (T-Mobile), and SM-T817V (Verizon Wireless).

Here’s a screenshot showing certification details for one of the above models, the SM-T817:

It won’t be too long now before we start to see Android 7.0 rolling out to Galaxy Tab S2 devices around the world. Unlocked devices typically get the drop first, following which carrier-locked devices will start seeing the upgrade option for Android 7.0 Nougat.

What about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 Release Date?

Unfortunately, we might not see anything high than 7.0 Nougat for these devices. Samsung is reportedly getting ready to launch the Galaxy Tab S3 (TM-T825) in the next few weeks. If that’s true, then higher versions of Nougat will probably be reserved for those devices, which can better leverage the capabilities of Android 7.1.1 Nougat and higher.

As of now, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S3 is expected to come with Nougat 7.0 as the stock OS, but we might see an upgrade for 7.1 or possibly 7.1.1 drop soon after. Here are the known specs for the Galaxy Tab S3, as spotted on GFXBench:

  • 9.6-inch display
  • 2,048 x 1,536 pixel resolution
  • Qualcomm snapdragon 820 SoC (1.2GHz)
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32GB storage
  • 12-megapixel camera
  • Android 7.0 Nougat

At this point, the release date is unconfirmed. However, there’s only about a month left before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in Barcelona. We might see Samsung unveiling it then, and availability soon after. We’ll bring you a firmer date once it’s been confirmed.
