Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus Details Leaked by Senior Samsung Official

Senior Samsung official leaks Galaxy S8 information

With so many leaks from every possible direction, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus smartphones are looking more and more like sieves. But this particular information could be authentic, since it reportedly comes from a “senior Samsung official”, according to a report carried by Korean news agency News1.

The source has confirmed that Samsung S8 will have a 5.8-inch display and the Galaxy S8 Plus will have a huge 6.2-inch display. Both of these phones, however, will not be much larger than the current Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge models because of the extremely slim top and bottom bezels that allows Samsung to achieve this.

The other piece of information is not that great. The batteries on these will be a 3000 mAh on the S8 and 3500 mAh on the larger S8 Plus. Why is this not great? For one, the larger displays will drain a lot of power, and it may not be compensated by the new Snapdragon and Exynos chips that are far more power-efficient than their predecessors.

To put that in perspective, the Galaxy S7 has the same 3000 mAh battery, but for a 5.1-inch display rather than the much bigger 5.8-inch display for the Galaxy S8; similarly, the 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 has a 3600 mAh battery, actually slightly more than the 3500 mAh expected to come with the massive 6.2-inch display on Galaxy S8 Plus.

Is this going to lead to a battery life problem? Hopefully not, because research shows that the majority of smartphone owners are always asking for one thing – longer battery life.

Even if new hardware inside the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are a lot more power-efficient, it won’t make consumers happy if they don’t delivery more battery life than the current models.

As for the other specs gathered from leaks so far, some are good and some not so good.

  • Fingerprint and iris scanning are great, but both appear a little difficult to use. One, because of the positioning of the fingerprint scanner and the other because iris scanning is a three-step process – not great for a mobile device.
  • 4GB RAM is not cutting-edge enough at a time when competitors are all looking at 6GB or more.
  • Not too many camera upgrades, and dual cameras are definitely not on the cards.
  • No Harman/Kardon speaker hardware on these phones, but next year we might see something, now that Samsung owns the company.
  • Both phones will have the Edge feature, not just the larger one.

Samsung has to be able to compete head on with not only iPhone 7, 7 Plus, Google Pixel and Pixel XL, but even though it’ll get a head start this year, in a matter of months it may have to run against iPhone 8/iPhone X as well as Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2.

As such, Samsung cannot afford to have a lukewarm reception for this year’s flagship models, especially since they’ve also got foldable devices and possibly a Note 8 lined up for later in 2017, possibly during the third quarter than runs from July through September.
