A MacRumors piece based on a research note from analysts at Barclays shows that the True Tone display technology that came on the 9.7-inch version of iPad Pro could be coming to iPhone 8 (iPhone Edition) as well as iPhone 7s and 7s Plus this year.
What Exactly is the True Tone Capability on the Current iPad Pro 9.7-inch Model?
True Tone is a proprietary technology used by Apple on just the one model of iPad Pro, the 9.7-inch variant. As Apple puts it, it’s “almost like looking at a sheet of paper.” What that means is, whatever the ambient light in your current location, the tone of the display is adjusted to make it look more natural and comfortable.
For example, if you’re out in the sun with your iPad Pro, the display will have brighter tones to match ambient light. Similarly, if you’re using the device under an incandescent light bulb, it will appear more yellow and warm.
This is achieved by advanced four-channel light sensors that will automatically adjust the color and intensity of the display to suit ambient lighting.
One of the biggest advantages of True Tone is that, under low-light conditions, such as when using the device in bed at night, it will block out ‘blue light’, the frequency of light that messes with your circadian rhythm and causes sleeplessness, insomnia and other sleep-related disorders. If your sleep problem is made worse by blue light, True Tone can help.
What the research note from Barclays analysts indicates is that this same technology will make its way into iPhone 8, iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus and, presumably, all other iPhone models launched henceforth. Last year, Mac Otakara claimed that the trio of second-generation iPad Pro units coming this Spring would also feature True Tone technology for their displays.
