Tesla CEO Elon Musk Just Dug a Hole on SpaceX Grounds. Where Will It Lead To?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Boring Company

Tesla CEO Elon Musk showed us a glimpse of how “The Boring Company” intends to shake up urban mobility, with its cars that skate on containers powered electrically. Elon Musk has been teasing us for quite some time with his Boring Company that wants to build tunnels under cities. But until now, we had no idea how those tunnels were going to de-congest our urban roads.

As the population around the world keep migrating towards cities, Urban Mobility is a huge issue, and traffic problems are on the rise in most of the major cities around the world. A few have used rail transport to great effect, but maintenance is a big issue and, more often than not, Metro networks bleed money like crazy.

We all need a creative solution for better urban transportation, which is completely dependent on the size of the road network. But roads cannot keep expanding in a city that keeps growing; there is very limited room for inner city roads to increase their throughput.

Elon Musk thinks there are only two options to address urban congestion: either you go aerial or you go underground:

“You have tall buildings, they’re all 3D, and then everyone wants to go into the building and leave the building at a same time,” Elon Musk said. “On a 2D road network, that obviously doesn’t work, so you have to go 3D either up or down. And I think probably down.”Wired

And it kind of makes sense. If you want to take the aerial route, will it be able to address the needs of a city that has more than a million inhabitants? While that’s the goal of some companies like the German startup Lilium, which recently showcased its flying electric car designed to address the urban transportation problem aerially, tunnels are altogether a different matter.

It’s still a mighty expensive thing to do, and it’s extremely time-consuming. But it is definitely one of the options that we have on hand, and urban transport needs a multiple options for sure.

Musk showed the world his concept during his recent Ted Talk. A car or possibly our personal vehicle gets on top of a container that goes underground and runs over an electric line embedded on the road. Suffice to say that the container runs on its own, eliminating the need to drive which in itself will be if great use.

It could be way too early, but Musk is indeed serious about the project, apparently, because “The Boring Company” has already started digging on the grounds of SpaceX’s Los Angeles headquarters. It’s a hole right now, not a tunnel, but it’s the start of something. As Elon Musk himself puts it:

“We have no idea what we’re doing—I want to be clear about that.”

It’s a great initiative, but is there really light at the end of this tunnel or will it hit a dead end the way so many underground urban projects do?
