The BMW 8 Series Coupe concept was unveiled yesterday, slated for a 2018 release, and the design speaks volumes about where BMW is going with this new concept car.
There’s a distinct feel of design elements from the i8 having crept in, but very subtly so. The design lines have a naturally elegant and sleek flow, and the coupe has a nice low-slung front that gives it the illusion of doing 200 mph while standing still. The kidney grill seems a bit overpowering, but this is just a concept car so things could change based on feedback between now and the start of production.
According to Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, Adrian van Hooydonk:
“The BMW Concept 8 Series is our take on a full-blooded high-end driving machine. It is a luxurious sports car which embodies both unadulterated dynamics and modern luxury like arguably no other. For me, it’s a slice of pure automotive fascination.”
It’s clear that he’s fully immersed in the experience, being a design expert, but even a layman might start spewing poetry after getting a look at this elegant beast. Here are some shots of the BMW 8 Series Coupe concept scheduled for launch sometime in 2018:
Here’s a video where you can see the 8 Series concept coupe in all its glory:
The BMW 8 Series Coupe is a very important flagship model that will drive the company’s “NUMBER ONE NEXT” strategy next year. According to Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Harald Krüger:
“The number 8 has always represented the pinnacle of sports performance and exclusivity at BMW. The forthcoming BMW 8 Series Coupe will demonstrate that razor-sharp dynamics and modern luxury can go hand-in-hand. This will be the next model in the expansion of our luxury-car offering and will raise the benchmark for coupes in the segment. In the process, we will strengthen our claim to leadership in the luxury class.”
In a world where coupes are getting rarer and SUVs are hogging the roads, the BMW 8 Series Coupe is most certainly a stand-out car, which will hopefully drive BMW sales higher in key markets across North America and Europe.
