Virgin Mobile Follows Suit on Sprint’s Free Unlimited Offer, But Goes iPhone-exclusive

Virgin Mobile Inner Circle

Virgin Mobile USA has announced its own version of Sprint’s free unlimited offer, giving customers the chance to get on an unlimited plan that costs all of one dollar for a whole year. Working with Apple to have the offer available at Apple Stores, Virgin Mobile is making this an iPhone-exclusive deal.

The $1 unlimited service offer is open until the end of July, after which the deal will be cut to six months of unlimited service. The terms are comparable with Sprint’s own “Unlimited Freedom” plan, and include 23GB of un-throttled data per billing cycle, 800 voice roaming minutes, 100MB of roaming data, and also various add-on packages for $5 and $10 that customers can opt for.

The deal is for iPhones only, and requires that a device be purchased either from Apple direct, or from Virgin Mobile, and then an existing number ported to Virgin’s Inner Circle plan.

Virgin Mobile essentially runs on Sprint’s network, so this is more of a follow-up plan for Sprint to poach subscribers from other carriers. In addition to the terms of usage, Virgin Mobile is also throwing in perks that are tied to its other brands, such as Virgin Atlantic, Virgin America, Virgin Hotels and other Virgin horizontals.`

Of significance here is that Virgin Mobile is becoming an iPhone-only carrier, the first in the United States. This is part of a larger Sprint strategy for the brand.

In a statement earlier this week, Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, said:

“Virgin has always looked to shake things up and challenge the status quo in any sector we go into. Mobile is no exception and with Virgin Mobile USA, we’ve now worked with Apple to create a compelling offer for our new Inner Circle plan. Simply put, when you buy an iPhone you will get the highest quality device and service plus access to an array of Virgin experiences and offers with our group of companies.”

Virgin Mobile USA has just made the formal announcement on its Facebook page.
