Tomorrow is June 23, 2017, the day of MOSEC 2017, a mobile security conference organized jointly by Team Pangu and PoC. Top security researchers (and jailbreak experts) like Luca Todesco will be addressing an audience of the jailbreak elite and other top mobile security experts that will be gathered at the Grand Kempinski hotel, at Shanghai, China. The big question that hangs over our heads right now: will Pangu release the iOS 10.3.1 jailbreak that they showcased in April this year?
Here are some reasons why they might and why they might not.
On the ‘why they might’ side, this is the perfect setting to show off their capabilities. They already did it at Janus, but MOSEC is their own baby, and to finally unveil the elusive iOS 10.3.1 jailbreak for iPhone 7 will certainly be a privilege they will have wanted to reserve for this special event.
Another reason why they might release the iOS 10.3.1 jailbreak at MOSEC 2017 is that this particular exploit might work on iOS 10.3.2 as well, assuming Apple didn’t patch the flaw based on which the JB was compiled. If Apple doesn’t patch it on iOS 10.3.3, that version will also be open to jailbreaking.
The third reason is that it will be a vindication of Team Pangu and its alleged connections with Apple. If Pangu is not under contract with Apple to not release the iOS 10.3.1 jailbreak for iPhone 7, this is the perfect opportunity to vindicate themselves and show the jailbreak community that they are still very much in the game.
The fourth reason that they could look at releasing the JB tool at this point in time is that if they do it right after Apple releases iOS 10.3.3 to the public, every iOS 10 device will be jailbreakable with this tool – again, assuming that Apple hasn’t found the flaw on its own and patched it on iOS 10.3.2 and iOS 10.3.3. That’s a massive pool of devices, starting from iPhone 5 and iPad Mini and going up all the way to iPhone 7 and the new iPad Pro, not to mention the fifth and sixth generations of iPod Touch.
These are four very powerful reasons for Pangu to release their iOS 10.3.1 jailbreak.
On the other hand, if we don’t see a JB release at MOSEC 2017 tomorrow, these might be the reasons why.
First, the rumors of Pangu having sold the jailbreak exploit to Apple could be true.
Second, if there is such an agreement in place, we will never see that jailbreak released to the public.
Third, if there’s no deal with Apple, and Pangu is waiting for another reason, the JB release may be further delayed beyond tomorrow. But that also means there is still hope that it will come out in the next two months or so.
