If you have a Windows 10 Mobile device and you’re wondering why Skype on the messaging app isn’t working, you probably don’t know that Microsoft has pulled Skype support for several Windows versions as of July 2, 2017.

Starting today, the Skype app will no longer work on Windows Phone 8, WP 8.1, smart TVs and Windows 10 Mobile task-based versions. Users will either get an error message or will be unable to connect to their Skype accounts.
To be clear, Microsoft is slowly phasing out older Skype versions as well as support for older devices and operating systems. According to an official Skype blog post:
“Skype is always making improvements, such as enhanced quality, better reliability, and improved security. Because we want everyone to experience the best Skype has to offer, it’s sometimes necessary to retire older versions of Skype, and Skype enabled devices. Unsupported Skype enabled devices, and platforms may experience problems with calls and chats, lost or dropped calls and instant messages, or could stop working completely.”
If you think you can bypass this by using Skype for Web on your retired device, there’s more bad news for you: Skype for Web is currently not supported on mobile phones.
Here’s a full list of retired operating systems that Skype will no longer work on:
- Android 4.0.2 and lower
- Blackberry OS 7.1 and lower
- iOS 7 and lower
- Mac OS X 10.8 and lower
- Skype landline phones, cordless DECT phones, and analog telephone adapters (ATA)
Note: Skype phones, and adapters may still be available to purchase through third party retailers, but are no longer supported - Skype mobile for Verizon
- Skype on 3
- Skype on Telkomsel
- Skype on TV
- Symbian OS
- Windows10 task-based app
- Windows Phone 8.1 and lower
- Windows RT
The Skype app for iOS and Android recently got a major upgrade to make it more social-friendly, and this purge of the Skype ecosystem today is yet another move in the forward direction for Skype.
According to a new report from MSPowerUser, Skype will also not work on Windows 10 Mobile TH2, or Threshold 2, the second development cycle of Windows 10 Mobile.
