Reliance Industries to Launch Rumored $8 4G VoLTE Feature Phone on July 21

A 4G VoLTE (Voice over LTE) feature phone from Reliance Industries Limited is soon to be unveiled in India. The official release is scheduled for July 21, 2017.

Reliance Retail’s Lyf-branded device with smartphone-like features is expected to be unveiled on July 21. The low-cost phone is said to be sold under the Lyf brand, the sister concern of Jio, owned by Reliance.

A report from Reliance indicates that its 4G service already has 120 million subscribers since the launch of its low-cost 4G service under the Jio banner, which the tremendous growth of which eventually slowed down in the past few months. With the release of 4G feature phones, the volume of subscribers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are likely to expand.

The video released reveals specifications, features and software details of the 4G phone. The phone will be branded as LYF, will feature a 2.4-inch color display and will come with a textured back. The device will come with a 2000mAh battery, 512MB RAM, and 4GB of internal storage expandable to 128GB with the microSD card. It also has dual SIM functionality – Standard and Nano – and on the rear will be a 2MP camera, and a VGA camera on the front. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi but no tethering or hotspot, and FM radio, Bluetooth 4.1, VoLTE and video calls are supported on the Jio 4G VoLTE feature phone.

Reliance Jio’s LYF 4G VoLTE feature phone will have an inbuilt voice assistant, something new to its series. The virtual assistant will support Indian languages and can run Jio apps along with Facebook and WhatsApp.

It is still unclear about whether or not other features and functionalities will it be limited.

It also reveals that the 4G phone will be bundled with Jio Apps – Jio TV, Jio cinema, Jio music and so on.

The speculations on price vary from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1500, and it is still unclear if the leaked device will actually be sold at Rs.500 as rumoured earlier.

Reliance is said to have placed an initial order of 18-20 million units for the handset with Chinese vendors – Zhejiang Techain Electronics Technology, Shenzhen CHINO-E Communication, Crave and Megaphone. The shipment is set to begin soon after the official launch on July 21.
