Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Kills MS Paint, Long Live Paint 3D

MS Paint Paint 3D

After 32 years of being the default bitmap application for Windows, Microsoft Paint (MS Paint) is finally being deprecated in the next major version of Windows: Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Its successor is Paint 3D, which first featured on earlier versions of Windows 10.

With the introduction of Paint 3D and Print 3D, Microsoft is phasing out one of the very first Windows applications that were launched alongside Windows 1.0 in 1985. It’s ironic that it should be Windows 10 that finally brings its demise after more than three decades.

Microsoft is moving towards a 3D and augmented reality experience on its Windows 10 platform. As such, it is investing a tremendous amount of time, money and effort in these areas. Paint 3D was initially previewed with Windows 10 Creators Update, which also brought several enhancements on the holographic and mixed reality front.

With Paint 3D comes a completely immersive form of creativity that is targeted towards designers and other creative professionals. It is also deeply integrated into HoloLens capabilities, which used 3D objects in real-world environments.

Now, Microsoft has the hardware to support 3D – in the form of Surface Studio and HoloLens, and it also has the software – Paint 3D – to provide the content. It’s an obvious move for the company since augmented/mixed reality is a big part of their future plans for Windows 10.

Moreover, 3D is an ideal model to work with on touchscreen displays, since it can be manipulated by hand. It’s similar to how you would virtually change the orientation of an object in HoloLens using hand gestures.

And that’s really one of the biggest driving factors in 3D adoption – the ability to use air gestures or screen swipes to handle a virtual object. Besides, MS Paint is kind of like Solitaire on Windows. Nobody uses it unless they have nothing else to do. It’s probably still good for kids learning the ropes, but even for that, 3D offers a much more immersive experience.

We bid you farewell, Microsoft Paint.
