With a lot of new flagship devices lined up for release this year – iPhone 8, the two upgrades to iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and Galaxy Note 8 – Google Pixel 2 is also making its way into users’ hands later this year.
Though not much official information is forthcoming about the next Pixel phone (expected to be named Pixel 2), several leaks suggest that it will have a slimmer design and a better camera.
The smaller Pixel 2 is said to resemble the original handset of the current HTC-made Google Pixel, and will have a 4.97-inch screen with a more basic 1080p resolution. The larger model, Pixel 2 XL, will sport a 5.99-inch screen and is rumored to be designed and developed in partnership with LG, and will feature an all-screen front panel similar to LG G6 and a lot of other premium phones for 2017.
The device will be water resistant and dust-proof with an IP68 certification. It allows the device to survive submerged in five feet of water for up to 30 minutes.
Also, there’s talk about a squeezable frame, similar to the HTC U11. The squeezable frame (pressure sensitive) giving users easy and quick accessibility to launch the camera, turn on the flashlight, and access Google Assistant.
It is in the process of testing faster processors from Qualcomm, Intel and possibly from Taiwanese chipset maker Media Tek, though nothing is confirmed yet. However, the latest rumor suggests that it could come with Qualcomm’s not-yet-released Snapdragon 836, which is a minor upgrade from the current SD 835 with clock speed boosts.
The most significant feature is the fingerprint sensor, allowing the user to unlock the device simply by touching the screen. It is said that its rivals in the premium segment, Apple and Samsung, have also been working to integrate the fingerprint sensor into the display in their upcoming devices. Samsung has decided to pull off the feature from the Galaxy Note 8, but Apple’s efforts are on and it is likely to cause a minor delay in iPhone 8 launch, if those rumors are true.
Needless to say, on its camera technology, it has given a great photographic experience with a single camera lens. Now, with the dual camera set-up consisting of a wide-angle along with a telephoto lens, it is expected to further enhance the picture quality and user experience. Both the cameras are placed horizontally, with a large LED flash being part of the camera cutout.
The Pixel 2 devices will come with the latest version of Android. Google could be layering on some new features exclusive to Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 in the upcoming Android O.
The new Pixel is said to be a premium device and is likely to be more expensive than the current Pixel that’s priced at $650 unlocked. It is anticipated to increase by $50, though nothing has been shared by the company. The speculation is that the company may come with a more budget friendly Pixel called Pixel 2B, which is rumored to have lower-tiered hardware to go with its price tag.
