RED Hydrogen One: Prototypes Reveal the Perfect Pocket Pro Movie Maker

RED Hydrogen One

The RED Hydrogen One smartphone has finally had some of its prototypes revealed. Marques Brownlee, the first to see the device in person, has revealed a few nuggets of information on the upcoming Hydrogen One smartphone in his video shown at the bottom of this article.

In the video, you’ll see different prototypes, but only one of them looks more or less finished. Brownlee further reveals that the device will be larger than iPhone 7 Plus, indicating that there is plenty of room for high-end hardware. Also, reveals the final product to come with aluminium and titanium for its low and high-end models, respectively.

You can also see a camera bump, which appears to be a large circle showing a vertical dual lens system. The power button on the side is large and flat, with an integrated fingerprint reader. There’s also a button on the side for video recording. There is not much information revealed in terms of hardware specifications, but esthetically, the phone sports a rugged and functional yet appealing design, for the most part.

RED is known as a camera company for professionals, so we can expect the device to support high-quality camera tools. The phone comes with a “holographic“ display capable of presenting content with a 3D effect, while eliminating the need for special 3D glasses.

Rumors also suggest that the phone will support RED’s extensive lineup of digital cinema cameras. On the audio side, the company will be integrating its own proprietory audio format for multi-dimensional audio to match the holographic content.

Brownlee stated that the company is planning to move the headphone port to the top of the RED Hydrogen One for production models, whereas in the prototype it is shown on the bottom.
For connectivity, charging and storage, the phone uses a USB-C port and has an expandable MicroSD card slot. The screen will come in 5.5-inch super-high resolution, and the gold pins on the back side are there for expansion modules – to add even more functionality to the smartphone.

RED’s Hydrogen One smartphone pre-orders start at $1195, and Brownlee reports that the company will have the working prototype unit within the next 30-45 days.

Essentially, RED Hydrogen One is an Android smartphone referred to as “holographic media machine” for viewing and capturing “multidimensional” imagery. As rumored earlier, special algorithms will be used to convert stereo sound into multi-dimensional audio to add to the immersive experience.

The smartphones in the video are just prototypes, though one prototype is said to be final; a lot could change between the final prototype and the launch. But, we can expect the look to be the same as the first prototype from the video above.
