Samsung Launches Gear Sport, the Fitness-centric Smart Watch

Samsung Gear Sport

Samsung’s new smartwatch, Gear Sport, is the latest member of the company’s range of smart wearables. The Gear Sport is designed to be more accurate than ever, with modern fitness tracking and across-the-board compatibility with Under Armour’s suite of fitness apps.

The Gear Sport is more of a health-centric version, and is aimed to help users with different fitness levels to meet their goals and aspirations. It is bundled with features to help the user improve their daily workout, monitor their calories and burn outs.

The Gear Sport has a round display and a slightly squared-off bezel and is compatible with any 20mm watch band. The device allows taking calls, chatting with Bixby and also lets the user access connected smart home devices. The best part is its battery life – it’ll go for four days, per the report. It is sleeker and lighter than the Gear S3, one of the best-looking smart watches in the market. For beginners, it is packed with a whole lot more features than the existing options in the market.

Similar to Apple and Fitbit wearables, it comes with improved water resistance and improved heart rate monitoring. We recently reported that Fitbit has more accurate heart rate monitoring on its latest smartwatch: Fitbit Ionic

The Gear Sport also helps the user track their swimming with the Speedo app. Though it is positioned as a fitness-centric device, it offers features like accessing the Spotify app, allowing the user to download their playlists to the watch.

The user interface of the device is more attractive, with rotating bezels allowing the user to access the device more comfortably. The Gear Sport comes with Gorilla Glass 3 protection and it appears to be a large watc,h but it is light weight and comfortable to wear on smaller wrists as well.

The watch is built around a 1.2-inch circular AMOLED display with 360×360 pixels resolution. It is equipped with a dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of onboard storage and Bluetooth 4.2. On the battery front, it claims to work four days, but reduces to maximum 14 hours with continuous GPS operation. That’s still very impressive given the device’s size.

The device is compatible with any Android smartphone and also has the capability to link to Apple iPhones.

Samsung hasn’t revealed a price for the Gear Sport yet, but considering its other devices, Gear Fit 2 and Gear S3, it should be priced in the range of $199 to $349. It will be available with a black or blue silicon strap.
