LEGO to Launch “Women of NASA” Set on November 1 for $24.99

Lego

This Wednesday, LEGO announced that it would be “launching” a $24.99 kit called LEGO Ideas 21312 Women of NASA. The set will feature four Minifigures of notable women from the US space agency, including astronauts Sally Ride and Mae Jemison (first colored woman in space, astronomer Nancy Grace Roman (Mother of Hubble) and computer scientist Margaret Hamilton.

Each Minifigure will have its own backdrop that’s connected with the work they have done at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The project was first proposed by an MIT News deputy editor, Maia Weinstock, who submitted her proposal to LEGO Ideas, a community portal that gathers ideas from all over the world for future products. Weinstock’s submission hit the crucial 10,000 support votes that it takes for the company to consider the submission.

The idea was finally approved, and sent to LEGO designers Gemma Anderson and Marie Sertillanges for refinements to Weinstock’s original model.

Computer scientist Margaret Hamilton, who is one of the trail-blazing women featured in the set, is now 81 years old. She met with Weinstock as well as one of the LEGO designers responsible for the final product. Hamilton was the lead in developing the flight software for the Apollo moon missions.

For those in New York City, you can get your hands on a set as early as October 28, when Maia Weinstock will be visiting the company’s Flatiron District store to meet and greet fans.
