2018 Porsche 911 Carrera T: The Lightest 911 Carrera So Far at 3,142 Pounds

2018 Porsche 911 Carrera T

Porsche has just introduced the latest 911 Carrera, a Porsche 911 Carrera T (touring) that’s a smidgen lighter than its predecessors. At 3,142 pounds, it’s 11 pounds lighter than this year’s base model Carrera.

Though some fans are saying that the things Porsche has compromised on to make the vehicle lighter are the very things a tourer really needs, such as reducing the sound insulation. Other tweaks include using a loop instead of a door handle, and using lightweight glass.

The car comes at a base MSRP of $102,100 for the manual and $105,830 for the PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, or Porsche Double Clutch Transmission.) In comparison, the base Carrera has an MSRP of $91,100 for the manual and $94,310 for the PDK option.

Of course, what you pay for such a car will be much more, considering the fact that the suggested retail price comes from the manufacturer, not the dealer. Things like options, taxes, title, registration, delivery, processing and handling fee and dealer charges are all extra.

A side note on the PDK is in order here. Essentially, a PDK works much like any other dual-clutch transmission system, which uses two separate clutches to handle odd and even gear sets. The advantage is that it can be used in full automatic mode as well as semi-automatic mode, where the driver can manually change gears but still use the electrohydraulics of the transmission. Of note here is that the top speed on the manual version, which is an offshoot of the PDK, actually happens on the sixth gear, not the top gear, which is basically an overdrive gear.

The manual version of the Porsche 911 Carrera T goes from zero to sixty miles per hour in 4.3 seconds, just a shade under the 4.4 seconds on the base Carrera. Both deliver 370 hp at 6500 rpm, and both PDK variants clock 4 seconds flat from 0-60 mph with the Sport Chrono option.

Top track speed and fuel consumption are yet to be published, but with the lower weight, it’s likely that the new Porsche 911 Carrera T will show improvements over the 183 mph top track speed and 20 mpg (29 mpg on the highway) fuel consumption of the base Carrera from this year’s line-up.

The Porsche 911 Carrera T will be available starting March 2018.
