Nation Tilts Left on “Tsunami” of Democrats Winning Across America

Democrats v Republicans

“I don’t know how you get around that this wasn’t a referendum on the administration, I just don’t. Some of the very divisive rhetoric helped prompted and usher in a really high Democratic turnout in Virginia. We need to have some looking in the mirror,” said Rep. Scott Taylor (R-Va.) as states from Washington to Florida saw the Democrats claim major victories Tuesday.

In Virginia, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) won the governorship by a significant margin, while Justin Fairfax became the second African American to win a statewide position as lieutenant governor since Reconstruction. Also in Virginia, Attorney General Mark Herring won the re-election this year. Dems have picked up at least 14 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, and three more could swing left on potential recounts.

New Jersey will soon see Phil Murphy (D), a former Goldman Sachs executive, replace Gov. Chris Christie, who is very unpopular at the moment.

Even deep red districts in Georgia saw celebrations for two Democrats in special state House elections. Two Democrats finished first and second in a suburban Atlanta state district that was formerly a Republican stronghold in the state.

In Florida, an upset race saw former Mayor Rick Baker in the lead during early polls lose the race against Mayor Rick Kriseman, who won the re-election.

New Hampshire will get its first female mayor after Joyce Craig after ousting four-term Republican incumbent Ted Gatsas.

The focal point of the wins appear to be consistent messaging against Trump’s policies, rather than his statements or behavior since he took office.

As we saw earlier, from Taylor’s statement, a lot of Republicans have been rattled by the losses on Tuesday, and the Tsunami he referred to was not just in blue districts or states. It was across locations that represent a wide spectrum of political composition at the state and district levels.

Voters still consider Trump as a third-party rather than a representative of the GOP, and that’s what the Republicans failed to recognize this year. Some of them are already re-strategizing for next year, when they hope to take a more independent course for their campaigns.

It’s certainly an uplifting day for Democrats. After all, this is the first time they’ve been able to avenge the upset victory that took Trump all the way to the White House. And revenge, they say, is best served cold.
