U.S. Mocks Syria for Reversing Decision to Withdraw from Climate Agreement

US mocks Syria over Paris agreement decision reversal

The United States, now the sole survivor of the Paris climate agreement pullout by several countries, is ridiculing Syria for reversing its decision. Nicaragua had earlier reversed its decision and has agreed to be part of the global climate agreement.

Referring to Syria using chemical weapons against its civilians, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said:

“I find it ironic that the government of Syria, OK, would say that it wants to be involved, and that it cares so much about climate and things like CO2 gas. If the government of Syria cared so much about what was put in the air, then it wouldn’t be gassing its own people.”

Syria will be the 197th country to join the 2015 accord, which has committed to try and keep global warming to within 2 degrees celsius by controlling CO2 emission levels.

Nauert also said that delegates from the United States will travel to Bonn, Germany, next week to seek a “more favorable deal,” but reiterated:

“If we can get a more favorable deal for American businesses, American workers and taxpayers, then we will look at that. But we continue to go forward with the plan of pulling out.”

The United States technically back out of the agreement, or even submit a withdrawal request, until three years is over from the date of deal, which came into force on November 4, 2016. However, President Donald Trump already announced his intent in June this year. That leaves the United States as the only major CO2 emitter not committed to reducing their emissions.

Meanwhile, civil war rages on in Syria, where it is now the seventh year of conflict. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has told Ali Akbar Velayati, senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, in Damascus on Tuesday, that the war will continue until they have recovered and secured “all Syrian lands.”
