WikiLeaks asked Donald Trump Jr. for his dad’s tax returns and other things

The Story:

Private correspondence via Twitter direct messages between Donald Trump Jr. and WikiLeaks shows that the latter tried to get Julian Assange appointed as the Australian Ambassador to the United States after Trump (Sr.) was installed in the White House, among other requests made over several months of private conversations.

The Atlantic magazine exclusive shows that the two parties were in correspondence during the final stages of last year’s presidential election.

The correspondence in question (copies thereof) was first handed over by Trump Jr.’s attorneys to congressional investigators, and the Atlantic subsequently obtained one.

This Happened:

In a message dated December 16, WikiLeaks wrote this to Trump Jr.:

Hi Don. Hope you’re doing well! In relation to Mr. Assange: Obama/Clinton placed pressure on Sweden, UK and Australia (his home country) to illicitly go after Mr. Assange. It would be real easy and helpful for your dad to suggest that Australia appoint Assange ambassador to DC.”

Donald Trump Jr. later tweeted a transcript of what he claimed was the entire conversation between him and WikiLeaks.

It showed that the two parties sought information from each other in the run up to the election, but also showed that the correspondence was largely one-sided.

The correspondence continued until at least July of this year.

According to the Atlantic report:

“WikiLeaks made a series of increasingly bold requests, including asking for Trump’s tax returns, urging the Trump campaign on Election Day to reject the results of the election as rigged, and requesting that the president-elect tell Australia to appoint Julian Assange ambassador to the United States.”
