McConnell exploring all options to keep Roy Moore out of Senate

The Story:

  • U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has a serious problem on his hands, and he’s sparing no pains to achieve his core objective.

  • He wants to make sure that Roy Moore doesn’t make it to the Senate and is considering exercising several options, but Mr. Moore remains defiant about stepping down.

  • Mr. McConnell is now looking to work with the White House to figure out a way to keep Mr. Moore out of Senate even if he wins the Alabama special election on December 12.

Important Because:

The Alabama special election for the Senate seat is a crucial one for the GOP because their already-slim majority could weaken further if they lose that vital seat in a deep red state to a Democrat.

Mr. McConnell, however, said that the Republicans are still considering having another candidate launch a write-in campaign against Mr. Moore.

He stated recently that the Senate should expel Mr. Moore should he win the seat.

This Happened:

Mr. Moore’s Republican opponent Luther Strange had establishment support in the Republican primary, but Mr. Moore defeated him.

Mr. McConnell told reporters at the Capitol Tuesday that Mr. Moore was “obviously not fit to be in the United States Senate.”

He added that “we’ve looked at all the options to try and prevent that from happening.”

So far, five women have come forward to accuse Mr. Moore of sexual misconduct nearly four decades ago, when Mr. Moore, now 70, was in his 30s.

Mr. McConnell says he intends to discuss Mr. Moore’s situation with President Trump, who returns on Tuesday evening from his 12-day whirlwind tour of Asia.
