The Story:
Roy Moore, the Alabama Republican Senate nominee for the special election next month, has been embroiled in controversy surrounding his alleged liking for young teenage girls during his tenure as district attorney when in his 30s, nearly four decades ago.
Five women have come forward so far – one of whom was 14 when the alleged incident occurred – to accuse him of inappropriate sexual conduct.
At a press conference this Monday, the newest accuser, Beverly Young Nelson, said that Moore intimidated her into silence using his position as district attorney. After offering her a ride home and sexually assaulting her in his car, Moore allegedly said:
“You’re a child. I am the district attorney of Etowah County and if you tell anyone about this, no one will ever believe you.”
Moore is denying all allegations, but still has strong supporters among Alabama’s voting population.
