We will strengthen missile defense capabilities to address North Korea threat: Japan PM Shinzo Abe

The Short:

Japanese premiere Shinzo Abe considers the North Korea threat to be the gravest security worry his country has had to face since World War II, saying on Friday that he pledges to boost his country’s defenses.

The Long:

In a speech to the Japanese parliament outlining his priorities, the prime minister called North Korea’s sixth nuclear test and two missile launches over Japan a national crisis.

He said that the “escalating provocations” would have concrete action as a response.

“We will strengthen Japanese defense power, including missile defense capabilities, in order to protect the people’s lives and peace,” he said.

Abe also urged the international community to increase its pressure on the errant nation to try to convince it to alter its current policies.
