Uber to Buy 24,000 Volvo XC 90 SUVs over 3-year period for self-driving fleet

Uber has signed a major deal with Volvo to buy around 24,000 XC-90 SUVs over a three-year period from 2019 through 2021.

The deal comes in at about $1.4 billion considering a U.S. base model price of $46,900, according to the Financial Times.

The two companies partnered last year to develop autonomous vehicle technology along with a vehicle to implement it in, and the ride-hailing major already uses the Volvo SUV for self-driving tests being conducted in Arizona, San Francisco and Pittsburgh.

Uber’s deal is not exclusive to Volvo, and the company has reserved the right to work with other OEMs to develop its fully functional fleet of driverless cars.
