Apple completes $30M acquisition of augmented reality headset maker “Vrvana”

TechCrunch has reported that Apple has acquired Canadian startup Vrvana to further its ambitions in the augmented reality (AR) space.

Vrvana makes the yet-to-ship Totem headset, which reportedly delivers both augmented reality and virtual reality through one head-mounted device, or HMD.

Though Apple is typically secretive of its AR ambitions, the release of ARKit and CEO Tim Cooks thoughts on Apple’s role in AR have pointed to a major journey culminating in something big by 2020.

That “something big” could be Vrvana’s AR headset, but redesigned to Apple’s specifications.

It is unclear which of Vrvana’s technologies will make it to Apple, but some of its employees have already moved to Apple HQ.
