Alabama Senate contest polls now closed, can Moore do a Trump?

Donald Trump became the President of the United States despite multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior against him, not to mention a controversial tape incriminating him.

As polls close in the Alabama Senate run, will Moore be able to do the same and secure the Senate seat despite ongoing allegations and accusations?

Sentiment ahead of the special election held earlier today was too closely divided between Moore and Doug Jones to make a call on who would win.

What was once considered a sure bet for the GOP has now flipped over and become a rare opportunity for the Democrats to win the deep red state after 25 long years.

As of this writing, Moore appears to be pulling ahead with 51.9% of approximately 215,000 votes, per data from Associated Press.

If Moore does win, which is highly likely considering the support he’s been receiving from the President, the GOP and Republican voters since the initial knee-jerk reaction from GOP senators, then it will amount to a vindication of his alleged past actions.

Like the White House now says that the allegations against Trump were litigated by the very fact that he was voted into office, Moore’s team could end up taking the same stance.

But even though a Moore win may look like a vindication, just as Trump was seemingly vindicated as he ascended to the presidency, there will be a lingering scent of these accusations well into the midterm election next year.

That prolonged attention could be disastrous for the GOP, and senior Republicans and White House officials are undoubtedly factoring that into their campaign strategy for 2018.

And it’s not helping that at least three of Trump’s accusers are once again in the spotlight.

For now, all focus is on the Alabama Senate race. For the first time in a quarter of a century, the GOP in Alabama has its heart in its mouth in anticipation of the results of today’s special election.
