Robots will replace one in five jobs globally by 2030, says McKinsey research study

The research arm of McKinsey & Co. has released a study that shows robots will replace more than 800 million jobs globally by 2030, which is more than a fifth of the entire world’s workforce.

Such reports have, in general, been taken with a pinch of salt because of the long timelines involved, but the data underlying the report is certainly one that deserves looking into.

This particular study by the McKinsey Global Institute involved 800 occupations across 46 countries, and shows China as being the most affected.

On the bright side, while these positions may be “lost”, the people working them are likely to transition into new jobs. It might, however, involve them learning new skills to qualify.

The job types most affected by robots and automation, says the study, are technology specialists, machine operators, fast-food workers and back-office employees.
