The Shape of Water: Should You Watch the Best Picture of the 2018 Oscars?

The-Shape-of-Water

The Shape of Water was just awarded Best Picture at the 2018 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards, or the 2018 Oscars. What’s the movie all about, and should you watch it?

The 4-Oscar winner beat out some serious films to take the top spot at the Oscars this year. Great movies like Lady Bird, Dunkirk and Get Out had to bow out in front of this Guillermo del Toro directed fantasy movie.

What’s the movie about?

In short, it’s the story of a mute cleaning woman who falls in love with a sea creature. The story is set in the early 60s against the background of Cold War America where a female janitor at a high-security government lab accidentally comes across an amphibious creature with whom she falls in love.

Should you watch it?

If you like fantasy and romance, this movie is definitely for you. There’s a bit of intrigue mixed in as well, as the Soviets have an agent infiltrate the top secret facility to poison and kill the creature to stop the Americans from pursuing their research. The heroine’s final battle is between her feelings for the creature and his need to be set free into wild waters.

The movie has all the ingredients of a blockbuster – danger, thrills, severed fingers, hard-boiled eggs and a little bit of cat-eating by the creature when he escapes from the bathtub that the heroine puts him in after breaking him out of the facility. The movie is well-directed, of course, and Del Toro is able to built the tension that is so important to a movie of this genre.

The end is a tad unbelievable, with the heroine being able to… well, I’m not going to spoil it for you. IMDb already does that with its synopsis.

So go ahead, pop some corn and curl up with your favorite movie companion for the film that just won the Best Picture Award at the 2018 Oscars: The Shape of Water.
