Huawei surpassed Apple to become the world’s second largest smartphone vendor

Huawei is among the biggest names in the smartphone industry. The Chinese firm is shipping hundreds of millions of smartphone units every year, helping the company grab its own market ground. Huawei is best known for its affordable smartphones with crazy specs. However, the company has started shifting its focus on the premium segment.

According to the latest reports, Huawei officially surpassed Apple to become the world’s second largest smartphone vendor in the second quarter of the year. Specifically, the Chinese firm shipped 54 million smartphone units, a strong increase from the year-ago period. Apple, on the other hand, sold 41 million iPhone units in the same period this year.

Samsung continues to lead the smartphone market in Q2/2018, but the company saw a slight decline in smartphone shipments. In total, the South Korean firm shipped over 70 million smartphone units in the second quarter of 2018. Tech experts say that Huawei will report a boost in sales in the coming months.

The reason behind Huawei’s success lies in a strong sales performance of the P20 flagship phone. Sources claim that Huawei has sold 7 million P20 and P20 Pro units so far, which is pretty impressive. Besides, Huawei-owned smartphone brand, Honor made a significant contribution to the company’s total revenue in Q2/2018.

Tech watchers predict that Huawei will overtake Apple next year. The Chinese firm has been working on new phones that are set for 2019 release. However, the Cupertino company reported a slight rise in smartphone sales in Q2/2018. The company’s iPhone X is one of the best selling phones on the market. In the first quarter of the year, Apple shipped 16 million iPhone X units.

Apple is expected to launch new iPhone models in September this year. According to the latest reports, Apple will announce new iPhone models on September 12. If this is the case, Apple will release them to the public on September 21. However, Apple has not specified when we are seeing new iPhone models this year.

The smartphone market is showing signs of saturation. The release of new iPhone models is expected to boost the market.
