Tesla, Elon Musk and the Breadcrumbs We Failed to Follow

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been waiting for a long time to take Tesla private. Back in 2013 he wrote to SpaceX employees that If being a public company diminishes that likelihood, then we should not do so until Mars is secure. He also went on to say that Tesla and SolarCity are public because they don’t have a choice.

If we read between the lines, Elon Musk has said that if there was choice then he would have kept Tesla private. Now that the company is approaching profitability Tesla has the standing to attract private investors. Read More

Tesla Model 3 2170 Battery Cell Format is Years Ahead of Anything Else

When Tesla boasted that its Model 3 batteries were “the highest energy density cells used in any electric vehicle,” it may or may not have known that this would hold true for years to come. I suspect they knew very well because Panasonic made it very clear that they had already achieved something that every battery competitor is trying to do – reduce the amount of cobalt used in each cell. This Is What Happens When Tesla and Model 3 Has No Competition

Even when the call came, the competition fell asleep at the wheel.

The Subject? Reservations for Tesla Model S and Model X were coming, even though Tesla decided to cap production at 100,000 units for 2018. Buying competitors electric vehicles, available for the past several years with unmentionable range, was always an option but lacked the allure of a company with a steadily growing network of superchargers. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has shown no interest so far in financing Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s proposed $72 billion deal to take the U.S. electric car maker private, despite acquiring a minority stake in the company this year, two sources familiar with the matter said. Read More

Grand Theft Auto: Tesla Boasts Impressive Stolen Car Recovery Rate. Really?

Of the 138 Teslas stolen in the U.S. between 2013 and May 2018, only 2 cars were never recovered. How is that possible when the average recovery rate of stolen automobiles in the United States has consistently been in the mid-double-digits? That’s the question that rudely interrupted my thoughts while reading about it in Market Watch.

That’s an amazing statistic, isn’t it? Read More

You have to appreciate his foresight to build a Supercharger network that is accessible by 322,443,000 Americans. Read More

Elon Musk’s plan to take Tesla private isn’t crazy. Just ask Henry Ford (Via Autoblog)

Although Elon Musk’s proposed idea of taking Tesla private seems like something totally unthinkable, there really is precedent for this in the auto industry — something that occurred nearly 100 years ago.

Henry Ford, who was to cantankerousness what Musk is to showmanship, was annoyed with minority shareholders who wanted things such as higher dividends to be paid out during the 1910s. The way they thought this could be accomplished was through raising the price of the Model T. Henry was completely outraged by having anyone tell him how to run his business. Read More
