Man to launch himself in a rocket to prove the earth is flat

If the title of this article wasn’t good enough to make you click away to the next, possibly more sane, news article, then you deserve this. Read on!

A 61-year-old DIY enthusiast, stuntman and limo driver who goes by the name of “Mad” Mike Hughes wants to launch a $20,000 steam-powered rocket from a ghost town called Amboy in the Mojave Desert.

That’s not all. Hughes is going to strap himself to that equation, figuratively speaking, and to the rocket, literally speaking. He says he’ll travel up until about 1,800 feet and a maximum speed of 500 mph, and then two parachutes will deploy that will bring him floating gently back to earth.

Well, not exactly.

During his last attempt (oh, yes) nearly four years ago, he managed to attain a height of 1,374 feet, but sustained injuries from the extreme g-forces and a rough landing. Perhaps it was because he wasn’t using the latest parachute technology, I don’t know.

This is the parachute right after it was deployed on his last fright..uh, flight.

And what’s he doing all this for? To prove that the earth is flat. In fact, the Research Flat Earth group is his chief sponsor.

This story was originally reported by the Associated Press.
