Apple Drops tvOS 10.1 Developer Beta 5 (14U593) for Fourth Generation Apple TV

tvOS 10.1 developer beta 5 released

Apple’s tvOS 10.1 has received its fifth developer beta as of December 5.

Here are some of the key features we should see for tvOS 10.1, currently available on developer beta only.

Single Sign-on – Once authenticated with your cable provider, you can unlock all your paid video apps with a single sign-on. For this feature to work, all paid video apps will need to update to the latest versions.

TV App – tvIOS 10.1 will bring the TV app to Apple TV when it launches later this month. The TV app was included in the second beta for iOS 10.2, but at the time it wasn’t available – not until Apple dropped the third beta of tvOS 10.1.

Earlier features that Apple brought in with tvOS 10 and the 10.0.1 update are as follows:

New Dark Mode – The company brought in a new dark mode that was actually not as dark as on previous Apple TV models. You can just ask Siri to turn it on or off, or you can head to Settings → General → Appearance → Light/Dark to toggle the two modes.

Siri Got Smarter – Siri Search got an upgrade on the previous tvOS update, but the YouTube search merely takes you to a search page with your results listed rather than on a dedicated user interface. The likely explanation is that you really need something like a full-on search engine to trawl through the millions upon millions of videos on YouTube – not so with Netflix or even iTunes.

Apple Music Redesigned – This was also a significant change, with Apple Music getting a fresh layout and a special search tab.

Photos with Memories – Apple TV is one of the places to find Memories, and the feature basically groups photos based on locations and dates. Not much work for the user, but it’s quite customizable so you can try some fun stuff before sharing your precious memories.

Automatic App Downloads – As with iOS, tvOS 10 brought the automatic app download feature so anything you buy on another device is automatically made available on Apple TV.

Quite a few great features came with tvOS 10, but the single sign-on is probably the most utility-friendly update coming on iOS 10.1. Stay tuned – we’ll be updating you as soon as we know more.
