Nine days later, ARA San Juan still missing; search will go on, says President Macri

ARA San Juan

Nine days ago the Argentinian naval submarine ARA San Juan went missing after several satellite signals and what sounded like an explosion were detected by observers.

Today, the families of the 44 souls on board left the submarine’s naval base at Mar del Plata in anger and grief over evidence that the submarine may have exploded and may never be recovered.

Argentinian President Mauricio Macri confirmed that the search would continue and that a “deep and serious” investigation would follow once the sub was found, of which he seemed confident.

At a news conference conveying the message, Macri said in reference to the investigation:

“This means understanding how a submarine that had received midlife maintenance and was in perfect condition to navigate apparently suffered this explosion.”

Nobody, neither the government nor the navy, has yet commented on the possibility that the crew is now dead. The ARA San Juan carried enough oxygen for a week under water, but it has been nearly 10 days since the incident.
