Elon Musk on Why Tesla Pitched a Tent for its Model 3 Assembly Line

After the media furor over Tesla building a Tent for its Model 3 Assembly line, it was only a matter of time before Elon responded through his favorite medium of choice – Twitter.

Musk made it clear that it was time constraint that forced Tesla to build a tent for the new assembly line. Tesla is scrambling to hit its production goal of 5,000 Model 3s per week and as per our calculations, Tesla is very close to achieving its target over the next week.

Even if they miss they are going to get very close, as Tesla has already crossed 500 cars per day production capacity.

“All parts of the Model 3 production system are now above 500 and some are almost at 700 cars already.” – Elon Musk’s email to Tesla employees on June 15, 2018

Now the scramble is to get all parts of Model 3 production to be over 700 and Tesla needed an additional assembly line to get close.

Elon also added that “They also poured the concrete & built the whole assembly line using scrap we had in warehouses. And it’s way better than the other GA line that cost hundreds of millions!”

So not only did Tesla build the Tent in record time they also saved a ton of money in the process.

And there is one more thing. The “Tent” is not going anywhere.

As soon as I saw the tent, my initial reaction was it was a temporary structure and Tesla will either move things back into the factory or they will get a proper roof as soon as its possible. Since I have no idea about what happens inside an auto factory, I contacted BenPrice at Teslamotorsclub.

His response.

So I don’t think they need to do anything – I don’t think it changes the production environment from anything I’ve been in that is more permanent. Maybe they’ll build walls and a roof around that tent then remove it – that would be my guess if anything, but in reality, and based on the Cali climate, this could be a long term solution. – BenPrice via Teslamotorsclub

Elon made it clear that the tent is here to stay.
