YouTube Tests Premium Lite Subscription for Ad-Free Viewing at a Cheaper Price

YouTube lovers around the world should heave a sigh of relief as Google is making available a more affordable premium subscription range for YouTube that offers an ad-free view and other features of YouTube Premium, including offline downloads or background playback. The new “Premium Lite” plan has been identified by a user in ResetEra and YouTube has confirmed the trial offer in an ad shared with The Verge. Premium Lite is currently being tested in countries like Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway.

“At Nordics and Benelux (excluding Iceland), we are testing a new offer to give customers more options: Premium Lite price € 6.99 per month (or local equivalent per month) and it includes ad-free videos on YouTube,” a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement. By comparison, YouTube’s current premium plan in Europe costs a heftier subscription fee of around € 11.99 per month.

What Does Premium Lite Offer?

Premium Lite includes YouTube’s main app, iOS, Android, smart TVs, and game consoles, as well as an ad-free view on the YouTube Kids app. However, it does not include any YouTube music features such as ad-free listening and other premium features such as background playback (when you want to switch to another app while continuing to listen to audio from YouTube videos) or offline downloads.

What YouTube Promises

Apparently targeting those who dislike ads on YouTube but don’t show much interest in other features of the premium version such as offline downloads, Premium Lite seems like an attractive proposition. But at its current price, Premium Lite still costs 60 percent of the subscription price, while only providing a quarter of its benefits. YouTube says the current subscription is in the experimental phase and is looking to create more plans based on audience feedback.

One problem is that YouTube Premium Lite does not have background playback or offline downloads for your favorite content. This limits the overall user experience. However, for those who want to remove ads from the content, it’s an affordable way to access exclusive YouTube originals and support the creators.
