Tesla Announces Model S P100D, 0-60mph in 2.5 Seconds, 315-mile Range

Tesla keeps outdoing itself with every coming month. It has recently announced that a Model S with a 100KWh battery is ready for delivery, and owners of the P90D version can opt for an upgrade to the new battery pack.

The upgraded Model S certainly packs a punch, delivering an acceleration of 0-60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds. That’s a full 0.1 seconds shaved off the P90D with the Ludicrous battery upgrade they announced last week.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is undoubtedly proud of this new achievement by his team at Tesla Motors:

“I think it’s quite a milestone that the fastest car in the world, of any kind, is electric. I think this is really gonna send the message that sustainable transport is here to stay.”

Technically, it’s not the fastest production car in the world. That title belongs to the Hennessey Venom GT, which can do 270 miles per hour. One of the 11 Hennessey Venom GTs in existence is owned by Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler, who paid a cool $1.2 million for the car. The Texas-based company only plans to make a total of 29 such cars.

The Bugatti Veyron has long been known as the fastest production car in the world, but that’s only because they missed the top speed of the Hennessey by a mere 1 mile per hour, clocking 269 miles per hour on their fastest run. However, the Veyron is priced at more than double the cost of a Hennessey Venom GT, or $2.42 million.

But the best car to compare with the Tesla Model S P100D is probably the 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder, which can go from 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds. That’s only 0.2 seconds faster than what is now the fastest Tesla in the world.

If you’ve pre-ordered the Tesla Model S you can upgrade to the P100D battery pack for $10,000. If you’ve already had your Model S delivered, it will cost you $20,000 for an upgrade, which includes the cost of recycling your current battery pack.

Musk is being upfront about the additional cost, and says that it will help pay for the cheaper Model 3 that everyone is waiting for.

The best thing about the P100D version of the Model S is its range – they’ve managed to breach the 300 mile barrier with a new range of 315 miles per full recharge. That means you can literally drive non-stop from New York City to Fredericksburg, Virginia  – a distance of about 290 miles by road – and still have spare power left.

If you’re a Tesla fan, you’ll definitely want one of these in your garage. Not only is it one of the fastest production cars in the world, but also one of the cleanest and smartest.
